Prosecute internal auditors, directors, and heads of institutions where corruption is identified – Domelevo. (Prekeh Media)

Former Auditor-General Daniel Yaw Domelevo has reiterated his call for decisive and uncompromising measures to tackle corruption within Ghana’s public sector.

He insists that genuine progress in the anti-corruption fight will only be achieved when accountability goes beyond lower-level staff to include internal auditors, directors, and institutional heads who oversee corrupt activities.

“Internal auditors, directors, and heads of institutions where corruption occurs must also face prosecution,” he asserted.

Mr. Domelevo emphasized the need to strengthen Ghana’s legal framework—particularly Article 286(4) of the 1992 Constitution—to empower anti-corruption institutions. He urged the enforcement of reverse burden of proof and unexplained wealth provisions to ensure that public officials justify their assets.

“President Mahama can curb corruption by reinforcing Article 286(4) of the Constitution and ensuring that laws on reverse burden and unexplained wealth are strictly applied,” Domelevo said.

He cautioned that ignoring existing anti-corruption laws could worsen the problem in the coming years.

“If we fail to enforce current laws, corruption cases will likely increase within the next five years,” he warned.

Mr. Domelevo also highlighted the importance of an efficient justice system, noting that swift and fair trials are key to deterrence. “Fast-tracking corruption cases to a maximum of three months would send a strong signal to other public officials,” he added.
