Chief of Staff to the Vice President, Alex Segbefia, has urged African nations to take full responsibility for their peace and development agenda, emphasizing that the continent must no longer remain on the sidelines of global decision-making.
Speaking at the graduation ceremony of the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre (KAIPTC), Mr. Segbefia stated, “Africa should no longer be viewed as a mere observer in world affairs, but as a confident and proactive force shaping its own future.”
He highlighted that despite facing major security threats such as terrorism, violent extremism, and illicit trafficking, Africa’s youthful population, growing innovation, and digital progress present enormous opportunities for transformation.
“Our continent faces the intertwined challenges of insecurity, extremism, and trafficking, yet within these challenges lie powerful opportunities driven by our dynamic youth and expanding digital landscape,” he noted.
Mr. Segbefia reaffirmed the government’s commitment to strengthening Ghana’s peace and security systems to protect national stability. He also mentioned ongoing diplomatic efforts to reintegrate Sahelian nations—Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso—into a unified regional community, emphasizing that Ghana’s progress depends on the stability of its neighbours.
He further revealed that the government has approved the resumption and completion of the KAIPTC building complex through a public-private partnership, aimed at expanding training facilities and reinforcing Ghana’s leadership in peacekeeping across Africa.
“I have been informed that the Ministry of Defence has given approval for the long-abandoned project to be revived and completed through an effective public-private partnership,” he said.
Mr. Segbefia commended the KAIPTC for its consistent role in training professionals dedicated to peace and security throughout the continent.
He concluded by encouraging African countries to foster unity, invest in innovation, and build strong institutions that safeguard peace and stability, stressing that true peace is achieved when citizens live without fear and enjoy equal opportunities to prosper.
