In a landmark step for Ghanaian sport, Professor Koryoe Anim-Wright, board member of Media General and former Registrar of the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA), has been inaugurated as the Chairperson of the newly established governing board of the Ghana Sports Fund.
The Ghana Sports Fund was created following the passage of the Sports Fund Bill in December 2025, a legislative milestone designed to provide a sustainable and transparent financing framework for sports in the country.
The initiative seeks to move beyond the traditional, reactive approach to funding and instead create a long-term, strategic financial base that will support athletes, infrastructure, and program development across all disciplines.
Professor Anim-Wright now leads an 11-member board composed of seasoned professionals, sports administrators, and former athletes whose expertise reflects the diverse needs of the Ghanaian sporting landscape.
The board’s composition underscores a blend of governance experience and sporting insight, a combination deemed essential for the effective implementation of the fund’s strategic goals.
Alongside Professor Anim-Wright, the board includes Dr. David Kofi Wuaku as Administrator, renowned boxing legend Azumah Nelson representing retired athletes, and Yaw Ampofo Ankrah, Director-General of the National Sports Authority.
Other members bringing administrative, technical, and leadership skills to the board are Mrs. Wilhelmina Asamoah, Mr. Duah Alhassan Oteng, Mrs. Deborah Adei Djanie, Mr. Ernest Thompson, Ms. Belinda Plange, Hon. Rachel Florence Appoh, and Hon. Dickson Kyere-Duah.
The board’s key objectives focus on several critical areas within the sports ecosystem. A priority is talent development, with plans to fund grassroots programs and inter-school competitions to nurture young athletes from an early age.
Upgrading and constructing modern sports infrastructure, particularly in underserved regions, is also high on the agenda, aimed at providing safe and world-class venues for training and competition.
Furthermore, the board is committed to promoting good governance, ensuring accountability and transparency in the allocation and utilization of funds, a move expected to restore confidence among stakeholders and partners.
In her acceptance remarks, Professor Anim-Wright expressed gratitude for the appointment and emphasized the board’s resolve to utilize the fund to uplift Ghanaian sport to new heights.
“We look around the room and we see the diversity of talents that we have on this board. But with that diversity of talents, we have a singularity of purpose. And everything that the minister has indicated in terms of what our mandate are, we embrace wholeheartedly. We understand the importance of having a sustainable funding for sports. We understand the weight that is on our shoulders and the importance of the task ahead of us. Wwe accept this responsibility wholeheartedly. We will work hard with all the stakeholders to consolidate sports funding where necessary for greater impact. And we want to assure you that we have all had the yearning of the Ghanaian people and we pledge to fill that yearning.”
As the Ghana Sports Fund begins its mandate, stakeholders across the country — from athletes and coaches to administrators and fans are hopeful that this new era will bring about meaningful change and sustainable growth for sports in Ghana.
