Ghanaian actress Lydia Forson has criticised the National Democratic Congress (NDC) over its decision to allow Obuasi Senior High Technical School headmaster Zakaria Abdulai to contest the party’s constituency chairmanship election.
The decision was taken despite ongoing investigations into sexual abuse allegations involving 19 children.
Ms Forson said Ghana has a history of shielding people accused of misconduct and giving them positions of power. She said she was therefore not shocked by the situation.
She also questioned why some people were taken aback by the ruling, claiming that comparable views had been accepted in the past.
According to the actress, upholding Mr Abdulai’s right to fair process should not involve writing off the children as liars. She urged legislators to stop letting party loyalty shape their positions on important issues.
She maintained that demanding proof of charges is not the same as suggesting the children plotted to fabricate accusations.
Ms Forson said the children deserve to be heard and protected while the allegations are investigated. She added that this does not deny the accused person justice.
She also criticised what she called the selective application of due process in cases involving allegations of sexual abuse.
