World Athletics Introduces Stricter Anti-Doping Measures

World Athletics has announced a new set of anti-doping regulations ahead of the 2025 international season, signaling a tougher stance against drug use in competitive sports. The measures, which include increased random testing and harsher penalties, aim to restore integrity to the sport after a series of doping scandals shook the athletics world in recent years.

Sebastian Coe, President of World Athletics, revealed that athletes competing in major international tournaments will now undergo surprise testing not just during competitions, but also in their training camps. The number of accredited laboratories worldwide is also being expanded to speed up testing results.

“The credibility of athletics depends on fairness,” Coe said in a press statement. “These measures are designed to ensure a level playing field and protect clean athletes.”

In Ghana and other African nations, athletics federations have welcomed the move, noting that doping scandals often overshadow the achievements of hardworking athletes. Local track coach Joseph Mensah emphasized the importance of education alongside punishment. “Athletes need to be taught early about the dangers of performance-enhancing drugs—not just for their careers, but also for their health,” he said.

The new rules mean athletes found guilty of doping could face up to eight years of suspension, effectively ending many careers. Officials believe the strict approach will discourage potential offenders.

With the 2025 World Championships around the corner, athletes are under more scrutiny than ever. Fans and governing bodies alike hope the changes will lead to cleaner, more transparent competitions in the years ahead.
