Yvonne Okoro Says Ghanaians Reject Local Films, Embrace Nollywood

Actress Yvonne Okoro has called for Ghanaian films to be judged on their quality, saying local productions are often wrongly seen as inferior to foreign ones.

She made the remarks in a Joy FM interview on October 25, 2026.

Ms Okoro said this perception makes it hard for local filmmakers to attract audiences, despite their advertising efforts. In her view, some viewers judge a film more by its country of origin than by its quality, and this has created a problem for the Ghanaian film industry.

“Ghanaians do not support our own. Everything Ghanaian, we see it as substandard. When you say it, people get offended by it, but it’s the truth,” she lamented.

She also questioned why some people willingly watch Nigerian films, particularly those uploaded on YouTube, but voice scepticism about Ghanaian films before giving them a chance.

She suggested that while viewers sometimes applaud Nigerian productions they like, they are less inclined to give Ghanaian creators the same respect.
