The Member of Parliament for Jomoro, Dorcas Affo-Toffey, has cut sod for the construction of a new coconut processing factory in the Jomoro Municipality of the Western Region.
The project aims to promote value addition and create economic opportunities in the area.
The factory is expected to strengthen the local coconut industry by supporting the processing of coconuts into finished and semi-finished products. This could raise the value of the crop and improve market access for farmers and others along the coconut value chain.
Jomoro is widely known for coconut production. The facility is seen as a major step towards expanding agro-processing in the municipality.
When operational, the factory is also expected to create jobs for residents, especially the youth, and increase demand for coconuts from local farmers.
Speaking at the ceremony, Madam Affo-Toffey said the initiative will contribute to Jomoroโs economic development by encouraging local production and promoting agro-industrial activities. She said it will help reduce reliance on selling raw agricultural produce. It will also open up opportunities for entrepreneurs and small-scale businesses in farming, transportation, processing and marketing.
The sod-cutting marks the official start of construction. Details such as the timeline, cost, funding source and expected production capacity have yet to be disclosed.
Residents and stakeholders in the agriculture sector are following the project closely, given its potential benefits for coconut farmers and businesses in Jomoro and surrounding communities.
