Local High School Wins Regional Basketball Championship

St. Peter’s Senior High School in Kumasi has been crowned champions of the Ashanti Regional Basketball Tournament after an intense final against Prempeh College. The match, held at the Kumasi Sports Stadium, drew large crowds of students, alumni, and basketball fans.

The final score ended 65–58 in favor of St. Peter’s, marking their first championship win in over a decade. Star player Kwame Boateng led the team with 25 points, 10 rebounds, and 5 assists, earning the title of Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the tournament.

Coach Emmanuel Owusu praised his team’s dedication and teamwork. “These boys have trained tirelessly for months, often practicing before and after school. Today, their hard work paid off,” he said.

The regional tournament has grown in popularity over the years, serving as a platform for scouting young basketball talent in Ghana. Representatives from the Ghana Basketball Association (GBA) were present, hinting that some players could be selected for national youth programs.

Fans stormed the court after the final whistle, chanting songs and waving school flags. For many, the victory was more than just a trophy—it was a source of pride for the entire school community.

Basketball’s rising popularity in Ghana is seen as a positive step in diversifying the nation’s sports culture, which has traditionally been dominated by football. With such thrilling tournaments, the future of Ghanaian basketball looks promising.
