Fitness Industry Sees Growth as More Gyms Open in Accra

Accra’s fitness industry is booming as more Ghanaians embrace active lifestyles. Over the past two years, the number of gyms and fitness centers in the city has doubled, according to data from the Ghana Health and Wellness Association.

The trend is fueled by a growing awareness of the importance of physical health, as well as the influence of social media. Fitness influencers have played a significant role in encouraging young people to take up gym memberships and prioritize exercise.

One of the newest gyms, UltraFit Arena, opened its doors in East Legon last month. Equipped with modern machines, a swimming pool, and personal trainers, it has already signed up over 500 members. “We’re seeing demand like never before,” said UltraFit manager, Abena Ofori. “People want spaces where they can work out, socialize, and invest in their health.”

The expansion is also creating new job opportunities. From trainers to nutritionists, the industry is employing hundreds of young professionals. Analysts project that the fitness sector in Ghana could grow by 20% annually if the trend continues.

However, not everyone is convinced. Some critics argue that gym memberships remain too expensive for the average Ghanaian, limiting access to urban elites. To address this, community gyms and outdoor fitness initiatives are being launched in lower-income areas.

As Ghana faces rising rates of lifestyle-related illnesses like hypertension and diabetes, experts say this fitness wave is timely. Whether in high-end gyms or simple outdoor parks, the message is clear: staying active is no longer a luxury, but a necessity.
