Mahama and NDC Owe Ghanaians an Apology Over ‘Galamsey Politics’ – Sly Tetteh

A former Member of Parliament for the Bortianor Ngleshie Amanfrom constituency, Sylvester Tetteh, has called on President John Dramani Mahama and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to issue a public apology for allegedly politicizing the issue of illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey, prior to the 2024 general elections.

According to the former legislator, the NDC leveraged the galamsey crisis to attack the then-ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), but has since failed to demonstrate a more effective approach after returning to power.

“For making political gain out of galamsey when they were in opposition, they owe Ghanaians an apology. How they handled the NPP government concerning galamsey wasn’t right. Now they’ve been put to shame,” he said during a panel discussion on Peace FM‘s morning show ‘Kokrokoo‘.

While expressing a willingness to support the current administration in tackling the menace, the former MP insisted that: “We’ll help them in fighting the menace, but they owe us an apology. We must call them out; they owe the public an apology, from President Mahama to the Energy Minister, who once believed in declaring a state of emergency to fight galamsey.”
