NPP flagbearer race: IGP to deploy at least 70 police officers to a polling station

The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno has announced that at least 70 police personnel will be deployed at each polling station for the upcoming New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer race.

Speaking during a peace pact meeting at Alisa Hotel in Accra on Thursday, January 22, 2026, the IGP assured the NPP of a violent free election.

He said all operational plans for the constituencies have been made but for Bawku where they would be needing military assistant, thus, a letter has been sent to Ghana Armed Forces to augment security on January 31, 2026.

The IGP cautioned persons who made open statement on social media that they would be using macho men during the elections to desist from their intentions.

“We have enough police personnel on the field, with the exception of Bawku. That is the area where we may need the support of the military,” Mr. Yohuno stated.

“We are assuring you that at least 70 is the minimum number of police personnel that will be stationed at each polling station. We have deployed heavily, and all senior officers will be present at the polling stations.”

Also, Chairman of the New Patriotic Party Elections Committee, Joseph Osei Owusu (Joewise), has told all the flagbearer aspirants of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to commit to accepting the outcome of the January 31, 2026, election.

He made the point that such a commitment would help build confidence among party members and enable them to campaign and vote freely for their preferred candidates without fear of division or intimidation.

“We want the contestants to affirm that the process has so far been transparent, inclusive, and fair. We want them to commit to accepting the results, and we want them to commit to supporting whoever wins out of the five contestants,” he said at the Peace Pact signing involving the five NPP flagbearer aspirants on Thursday, January 22, 2026,

“We believe this will allow or enable members of the party to build the sufficient confidence we need to be able to freely campaign and vote for whom they choose,” he explained.

For his part, Former Speaker of Parliament Professor Mike Aaron Oquaye called for fairness in the process to elect a flagbearer for the New Patriotic Party.

He urged all the aspirants to also respect the party’s values throughout the process.
