Courtois Ruled Out of Clásico With Flu-Like Illness

Real Madrid goalkeeper Courtois has been ruled out of tonight’s Clásico against Barcelona at Spotify Camp Nou.

The club announced the news on Sunday.

The Belgian will miss the match because of a flu-like illness that stops him being in optimal condition to play. It is the first Clásico of the season, on the tenth matchday of LaLiga.

Andriy Lunin will take Courtois’s place in goal. Illia Voloshyn, the Ukrainian goalkeeper for Real Madrid C, joins the squad following the absence.

It will be the third match Courtois has missed through flu or flu-related gastroenteritis. Marca reports he missed one last November and another in 2023. He also missed a match in 2019 with stomach problems. In total he has missed 108 matches through injury, serious or minor, since signing for Real Madrid in 2018.

This will be the first match he misses this season, having played in the first nine league rounds.

Marca describes his absence as a major setback in a very important match for Real Madrid if they want to close in on Barcelona at the top of the table.
