PREZ MAHAMA MOURNS RAILA ODINGA, CALLS HIS DEATH A SAD LOSS FOR AFRICA

President John Dramani Mahama has joined the continent in mourning the passing of Kenyan political icon Raila Odinga, describing his death as “a sad loss to Kenya, Africa and the world.”

In a message shared on his official Facebook page, Mahama extended his heartfelt condolences to Kenyan President William Ruto, Odinga’s wife Ida, the Odinga family, and the Kenyan people.

Odinga, a towering figure in African politics and a relentless advocate for democracy, passed away on Wednesday, October 15, at the age of 80 while receiving medical treatment in Kochi, India. Initial reports indicate he suffered a cardiac arrest.

Although he never secured the presidency in his five attempts, Odinga’s legacy is deeply woven into Kenya’s political fabric. He was a key driver behind the nation’s shift to multiparty democracy in 1991 and the adoption of a new constitution in 2010. His leadership during the contentious 2007 election period, which was marred by significant violence, remains a defining chapter in the country’s history.

Mahama’s tribute adds to the flood of condolences from across Africa and the globe, as leaders and citizens alike reflect on the profound impact of the man popularly known as “Agwambo” and “Baba.”
