Speaker Bagbin Warns MPs Over Persistent Absenteeism

Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin has cautioned Members of Parliament that continued absenteeism without permission could lead to the forfeiture of their seats, following concerns over poor attendance since the House reconvened.

Addressing the House on Wednesday, October 29, 2025, the Speaker expressed deep dissatisfaction with the ongoing trend of MPs skipping parliamentary sittings without valid reasons. He reminded lawmakers that under parliamentary regulations, persistent absenteeism without authorization could result in their seats being declared vacant.

Bagbin revealed that he had received attendance records for the first and second meetings since Parliament resumed but deliberately withheld their publication in hopes that attendance would improve. “I decided not to publish them, hoping that attendance will improve,” he explained, giving members a chance to amend their conduct before sanctions are applied.

His remarks come amid increasing concern over the effectiveness of the legislature, as frequent absences by MPs continue to affect debates, decision-making, and quorum requirements. Parliamentary rules mandate regular attendance and empower the Speaker to take action against members who absent themselves without reasonable excuse for a stipulated number of sittings.

The Speaker’s warning underscores his growing frustration with what he described as a lack of seriousness and commitment among some legislators. He has previously emphasized that consistent attendance is essential to effective governance and to the fulfillment of MPs’ constitutional responsibilities to their constituents.

Although Bagbin did not name any MPs or disclose the exact figures of absenteeism, his stern tone suggests that the situation has reached a point where decisive measures may soon be taken.
