Tension mounts in Tamale after IGP’s operations team kills young man during swoop on a den of criminals

Tension is beginning to brew in the Greater Tamale Metropolis following the killing of a young man believed to be in his early forties by the special operations team deployed by the Inspector General of Police to Tamale to flush out criminals.

The Metropolitan Chief Executive of Tamale, Abu Takoro believes although the operations are laudable, the excesses are undermining the peace of the metropolis

He has since called for a thorough investigation into the matter

The Special Operations Team of the Inspector General of Police, allegedly shot and killed one person in a swoop at Poloya Fong forest a suburb of Tamale.

The deceased died instantly after sustaining gunshot wounds.

According to some eyewitnesses present at the scene, the deceased who is a passerby was trying to escape with his motorbike following sporadic shooting in the forest but was allegedly hit by a stray bullet from the police.

Speaking exclusively to 3news.com, Abu Takoro, who doubles as the Chairman of the Metropolitan Security Committee (MUSEC) described the actions of the police as unfortunate.

“When we heard of the IGP’s special operation team, we were happy and in-fact their work in the metropolis has been helpful. However, the burning of the tricycles at the Nobisco forest and shooting and killing of the young man is unfortunate “

“We have met as MUSEC and have taken a decision and sent a report to the IGP. We want this matter thoroughly investigated,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Northern Regional Police Command in a statement issued by its Public Relations Officer, Chief Inspector Alhassan Lukman confirmed the killing of the young man. The command said they acted in self defense after the suspected criminals opened fire at them.

“During the operation, conducted on Monday December 1, 2025, One suspect engaged the police in a cross fire situation. The suspect sustained gun shoots injuries and was later confirmed dead.”

“The body has since been deposited at the Tamale Teaching Hospital for autopsy and further investigative processes,” they said.

In a similar operation on Thursday November 27, the IGPs operation team stormed the Nobisco forest burning tricycles and motorbikes belonging to some suspected drug traffickers
