The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has condemned what it describes as a “despicable and divisive” comment made by the Member of Parliament for Asante Akim South, Kwaku Asante Boateng, against former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia.

In an interview with Adom TV, the Member of Parliament reportedly launched an unprovoked verbal attack on Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, claiming he is unfit to lead the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

The remarks have drawn widespread condemnation from Ghanaians, including civil society groups and party members, who have denounced them as tribalistic and discriminatory.

In response, the NPP’s National Secretariat issued a statement on Saturday, disassociating the party from the MP’s comments and reaffirming its commitment to inclusivity, equality, and national unity.

“The NPP reiterates its longstanding commitment to inclusivity, equality, and national cohesion,” the statement read.

It emphasized that as a political organization built on the principles of freedom, justice, democracy, and equal opportunity, the NPP remains devoted to creating a society where every Ghanaian — regardless of ethnicity, religion, gender, or social background — can contribute meaningfully to national progress.

The party underscored that membership and recognition within its ranks are determined by loyalty, commitment, and service, not ethnicity or personal identity.

“The NPP welcomes all citizens who share its core values and are willing to support Ghana’s democratic and developmental aspirations,” the statement added.

Signed by General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong, the release further assured the public that the party will continue to uphold the dignity of every citizen and promote a political culture of tolerance, respect, and inclusiveness.

This controversy emerges as the NPP intensifies efforts to strengthen internal unity following the 2024 elections, during which Dr. Bawumia served as the party’s presidential candidate.
